前言

Preface

Wu Bin, founder of W.DESIGN, presented Drifting Yǎo from his Travelogue on Mountains series at the heart of the University of Milan during Fuorisalone 2025. Though the exhibition has concluded, its spirit continues to bridge the individual and collective, present and tradition, East and world—extending Eastern philosophy into a contemporary, global dialogue.

Chinese designer Wu Bin’s installation in the central courtyard of the University of Milan appears easy to find, yet many visitors wandered in search of it, asking, “Where is it?” Amid the vibrant, noisy campus, his charcoal-hued timber structure recedes into the shadows—subtle and understated. From afar, it becomes a blind spot; up close, a quiet black hole that absorbs the surrounding chaos.

Drifting Yǎo (杳然庭) draws from the word “杳,” meaning both “disappearing” and “remote.” The installation is formally simple, reduced to a primal function: shelter. Referencing the tent—architecture’s earliest form—its triangular shape offers a sense of protection. Though familiar, its power lies in the subtle calibration of scale, light, and atmosphere.

In an era of modernist crisis, true refuge lies not in physical safety but inner peace. Wu Bin’s installation offers this sanctuary—drawing visitors into a narrow, light-filled passage that silences the outside world. As attention turns inward, design recedes, allowing space for reflection and spiritual stillness.

A decade ago, whether at the Salone in Rho or in the city’s design week, the East was still exploring how to make its presence known. Design has never existed in isolation—it is part of an invisible chain shaped by the subtle yet powerful forces of politics, economics, and culture.

Back then, the more memorable works were highly stylized “New Chinese” designs—form was essential to presence, with ambitions of becoming timeless classics. But after years of assertive expression, the East now seems to shift course—stepping back, embracing disappearance, and accepting transience as a quiet strength.

At last year's Milan Design Week, Wu Bin's installation "Pan Yuan: Momentality Unfold" in Milan University’s courtyard embodied an Eastern philosophy: fleeting moments are eternal. The contrast between fragile paper and solid stone evoked poetry, highlighting the Eastern view that both birth and departure, as well as the rise and setting of the sun, are equally important.

《Catasta》— Michele De Lucchi

Wu Bin shared little about the creation of his installation but paid close attention to audience feedback. He also highlighted "Catasta," a wooden tower designed by Michele De Lucchi, located 100 meters from "Drifting Yǎo" at Milan University. De Lucchi, 74, held a solo exhibition, "The Room I Am In," in China this February.

Michele De Lucchi, a leading Italian architect, is known for "tinkering with scrap wood in his countryside studio." He believes the value of his work lies not in functionality, but in the emotions it evokes, mirroring the soul and essence of Eastern culture.

Wu Bin called it his favorite piece, surpassing even his own work, feeling that Mr. De Lucchi truly connected with the essence of the East. De Lucchi, when asked about A in a Chinese interview, said, "I meditate, at least AI cannot do that," addressing the modern crisis and finding solace in Eastern philosophy through meditation.

"Self-forgetfulness" is a term Wu Bin consciously emphasized in an interview, a profound concept rooted in personal experience. In "Drifting Yǎo," he invites us to explore what we must first "forget" to reach inner peace—offering a space where the external world is forgotten.

A "garden" that transitions from "invisibility" to "visibility" and back, echoing the Eastern saying: "Seeing a mountain is just a mountain, then it's not, and finally, it is again." This experience is universal, as Jean-Paul Sartre's 1945 play No Exit explores with the iconic line: "Hell is other people."

Sartre, a key figure in existentialism, concluded that handing over control of your existence to others allows external judgments to easily disrupt your peace. From an Eastern perspective, this is a reminder: everything is an illusion, and whether it is or not, it doesn’t matter. See, but also forget in an instant.

This reminds me of a common phrase in psychological counseling: "There is no one else here, only yourself." Let go of defenses, forget your surroundings. Only in solitude can we truly see ourselves.
